i’ve named the house

Posted on July 22, 2006. Filed under: Family |

My dad wanted to name the new house because it is something of an estate-like home and, in the British tradition, he thought it should have a name.

I wanted the name to be meaningful and, since I’m the wordsmith of the family, I came up with one that I simply adore.

Harrowglen Manor

The house and property were my grandparents’ before and they built up their lives from very little. Close to nothing. They met in Harrow in North London and were married and lived in the area before moving to Canada. Glen is the first part of the town where the house is, and where they grew old together. It is where they are buried, up on the hill in a beautiful little cemetary and it just felt fitting to include the start and end of their lives together in the name of the house that they toiled away for years to afford.

My grandmother called it her palace, and now it truly will be named in their memory.
