so tired that i even passed on an “exclusive” party — me!

Well, my time at my favourite weekend of the year is now over.

John and I met for dinner last night at Green Papaya (the one restaurant I know I can eat at) and then headed over to attend the Raincoast party (now the third annual for us — definitely has crossed over to the realm of tradition). It was at Stones Place, which made the official musical theme of the weekend Rolling Stones cover songs because we had heard the same music the night before. It was a great time and a cool bar — very rec room/basement feeling with couches all over the place. I ran into a lot of people who I haven’t seen since last year at this time, and it was just really nice to catch up. I didn’t get home until 2:30 or so though, and then got up and went back downtown today for the first actual trade show day of Book Expo.

I wanted to arrive before 10 because my favourite author from pre-school (Kathy Stinson, author of Red is Best) was signing at 11:30, but then they must have shifted her to the afternoon, because I didn’t see her. I think there’s a 25th anniversary edition of the book coming out this fall, so I’m going to have to get a copy of that.

I wandered around the expo for most of the day, catching up with friends from school and from within the industry who I’ve met over the year. One of the reason I enjoy this weekend so much is that a lot of my favourite people are all gathered in one place.

I was wiped out today though. Eyes burning, so tired, feeling gross, etc., but a friend and I went to see Mike Holmes and ended up meeting him, and getting his signature. He is such a nice guy — shook everyone’s hands, and paid us complements. He’s well, pretty much really hot, and the fact that he’s a sweetheart really doesn’t hurt.

We then went to hide in a hospitality suite hosted by Douglas & McIntyre where I met Scott McIntyre, which was pretty cool. And caught up with more colleagues there including a good friend from Queen’s who I used to work with at The Journal and some more of my favourite people.

I even managed to score a free ticket to the Manda party, but had to give it up because I just lost the energy to still be well, mobile. I’ve only managed to get to that party once, and if I was going back to the show tomorrow, I might have been more into it, but I have to get up super early and I probably couldn’t eat anything there or drink much, just not into party number 3 in a row anymore — especially when I have something every night this week and next Saturday — I have to conserve the energy — I guess I’m just getting old. All in all, a wonderful weekend in very enjoyable company.
