this is not a reading series, douglas coupland
I finished JPod last week sometime, and had the opportunity last night to go and see Douglas Coupland speak and do a reading (ironically at This is Not a Reading Series). Now, I haven't been in a lecture hall of that size for some time, but once you jam 500 twenteens in there, the stench of body odour was quite overwhelming. It actually gave me a headache, but I perservered.
I have quasi-met Doug before, but it was very cool to see him in action. He is quite witty and eloquent, and damn hillarious, and you can tell that he behaves how he writes in many cases. He read 3 excerpts from JPod which brought a different sort of life to the book from just reading the same words myself. The intonation and speed with which he skimmed over some sections brought a different perspective to the words. If you'd like to hear him speak, check out this interview podcast with his publisher.
