empty trains travelling the country

I was stopped by a train that was crossing the road yesterday on my way to work and, as it was early and my brain wasn’t quite functioning yet, I was staring at each of the cars as they passed by, more than half of which that were empty. Then I starting thinking — every train I see has mostly empty cars. Do people really still use trains for transporting things anymore or is it all part of some CN rail conspiracy to make it look like that trans-national railway was a good idea way back in the day. I’m just joking, of course they are still used, but how come there are always so many empty ones that you have to wait to pass by? What if you need the car that’s in the middle of the train to be taken off? Do the engineers have a plan in place for their destinations and what cars need to be emptied off and what ones added? And why do they decide to travel across roads at rush hour? As I said, it was damn early and I cannot be held responsible for the quality of these thoughts.
